Our full-service, Greensboro, NC laboratory is supported locally by couriers who transport thousands of samples per day across all of North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Tennessee and Central Virginia. 24 regional support labs are dedicated to rapid turnaround, and our labs are committed to delivering results on 95% of test samples by 7:00 AM the next day.

Dr. Janice Hessling

One of many on-staff MDs, PhDs and medical specialists, Dr. Hessling has served as Medical Director for over 8 years, overseeing the main Clinical Laboratory, the Molecular Laboratory, and Flow Cytometry. She is also one of the pathologists performing Anatomic Pathology, including both Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology.

Dr. Hessling is a graduate of Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. She completed her residency training at Duke Medical Center, which included a fifth year in a Surgical Pathology Fellowship with an emphasis in Immunohistochemistry. Dr. Hessling is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, with subspecialty board certification in Cytopathology. She also has extensive experience in Uropathology.

Dr. Valerie Fields

One of many on-staff MDs, PhDs and medical specialists, Dr. Valerie Fields serves as Medical Director of Cytology for Quest Diagnostics Greensboro, NC laboratory.

Dr. Fields received her medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Her subsequent fellowship in Cytopathology was completed at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Dr. Fields is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology with special interest in Gynecologic and Urologic Pathology and Global Medicine.

Andrea M. Paal, MS, CGC

Andrea is a Field Genetic Counselor at Quest Diagnostics, specializing in physician education for hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes. Andrea supports clinicians by providing education to assist them in identifying patients at high risk for a hereditary cancer syndrome, selecting the most appropriate genetic test for a patient based on their personal and family history, and counseling the patient appropriately regarding their genetic test results.

Prior to joining Quest Diagnostics in 2015, she worked for five years at Emory Healthcare and WellStar Health System, both located in Atlanta, GA. As a clinician, she provided genetic counseling to patients and their families for hereditary cancer susceptibility. She also developed the first Adult Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic in the state of Georgia and provided genetic counseling for patients regarding a variety of genetic conditions with cardiac implications.

Andrea completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN and received her Master of Science in Medical Genetics from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH. Andrea is an active member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and the Georgia Cancer Genetics Network. She was also the Co-Founder and previous Vice-President of the Georgia Association of Genetic Counselors.
